Lucy represents GB for Waterpolo Championships

17-year-old Lucy Mills recently took a break from her studies at Winstanley College to compete in the GB Ladies’ Under 17s European Waterpolo Championships in Volos, Greece.

Lucy who is from Croft and a previous student at Culcheth High, has been a waterpolo player since the age of seven, following in the foot splashes of her father and grandfather who was a coach and referee for Tyldesley’s waterpolo team.

Lucy, who plays in centre field position, has worked her way up to professional level which has brought the opportunity for travel to competitions and training camps in Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania and most recently the championships in Greece.

Sixteen teams competed in the championships with the GB team finishing in 12th position with some great games against countries where waterpolo is a recognised national sport.

The visit to Greece was particularly special for Lucy as many of her family, including her elderly grandfather were able to travel out to support her.

Lucy’s dad, Chris Mills, said: “We are so proud of Lucy’s achievements. It was an emotional trip for us with her grandad making the journey out to see her too.

“She balances her studies and rigorous training perfectly. As soon as we came back Lucy was back into training for the next competition as well as starting the second year of her A-levels in English Language, business and PE at college.”
